Senegal army shuts down 40 illegal gold mining sites
Senegal’s military has dismantled more than 40 illegal gold mining sites in the eastern region as part of a major crackdown in May. The operation, led by national defense forces, is part of growing efforts to curb environmental degradation and restore order in mining zones.
Authorities say several dozen individuals were arrested during the raids. Many of the sites were operating without licenses and posed serious safety and ecological risks.
The army has pledged to maintain pressure on illegal mining networks, citing national security and environmental protection as top priorities.
