An Egyptian-Emirati alliance is investing approximately EGP20bn to develop a new 500kV power transmission line in Egypt, according to a news report citing Asharq Business.

The line will carry electricity generated from renewable energy projects in the Gulf of Suez to the Hawamdiya substation south of Giza.

The alliance is led by Egypt- and UAE-based Intelligent Globe Construction Group, with the project expected to be completed within around 30 months.

Once operational, the transmission line will strengthen Egypt’s electricity grid by increasing its capacity to accommodate additional power generated from solar and wind projects in the Gulf of Suez.

The investment aligns with Egypt’s wider efforts to expand its electricity transmission network and substations to support the country’s renewable energy strategy.

Egypt is targeting an increase in the share of renewables in its electricity mix to 45% by 2028.

Over the past decade, Cairo has invested approximately EGP965bn in electricity generation, transmission and distribution projects.

The new line will support the integration of additional renewable generation into the national grid, while helping improve transmission capacity between key clean energy production zones and major demand centres.
