The Suez Canal Authority reported that traffic through the waterway rose 27 percent in August compared with the same month a year earlier, with the agency's chairperson crediting easing regional security conditions and a broadened lineup of ancillary maritime services.

The authority said 1,358 vessels transited the canal in August, up from 1,070 vessels in August 2025. Combined net tonnage carried by those ships climbed 51.1 percent, to 68.3 million tons from 45.2 million tons a year earlier. Revenue generated by the canal rose 56.7 percent, to $567.1 million from $326 million in August 2025.

The tonnage increase outpaced the rise in vessel numbers, and revenue growth outpaced both, suggesting larger ships have returned to the route alongside higher overall transit volume.

Osama Rabie, chairperson of the Suez Canal Authority, said the gains reflected a deliberate push to diversify the agency's income beyond transit fees. "The authority has adopted flexible policies and measures aimed at maintaining operational efficiency while developing new sources of revenue and expanding maritime services," Rabie said.

Rabie also pointed to the canal's continued importance amid wider strain on global supply chains, saying navigation through the waterway "remains safe and operational."

To supplement transit fees, the authority has added several paid offerings for vessels using the route, including ship maintenance and repair work, marine fuel supply, onboard medical care and crew rotation services. Officials said they are also developing simulation-based training programs for other regional ports and are pursuing maritime infrastructure partnerships elsewhere in Africa and the Arab world, including prospective port projects in Libya and Namibia; further details of the Namibia discussions were not disclosed. The figures were released as Egypt hosted events in Alexandria marking World Maritime Day 2026, giving the authority a platform to showcase both the traffic rebound and its expanded commercial services alongside the core transit business that has historically generated the bulk of its revenue.

The August results mark one of the greatest year-on-year improvements the canal has posted since traffic and revenue began recovering from a prolonged slump tied to reduced shipping volumes through the waterway. Even so, the authority did not say whether August's growth rate would be sustained into the final months of the year, and it did not provide comparative figures for July or September.

For now, the rebound gives Egypt a firmer financial footing on one of its largest sources of foreign-currency income, at a time when the government has also been courting outside investment in port and logistics infrastructure along the canal corridor.
