Gauteng's Department of Roads and Transport has completed the rehabilitation of an eight-kilometer stretch of the R568 near Bronkhorstspruit, upgrading a route that links the N4 highway with the D670 road. Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, the province's MEC for Roads and Transport, officially opened the newly reworked section last week.

The province classifies the R568 as a major rural arterial road, with traffic mostly light vehicles and medium-sized trucks. The route links area farms, businesses, and residential communities to the N4 corridor.

The project covered more than eight kilometers of road. Beyond resurfacing, crews built new paved shoulders and improved several key intersections along the route.

The project also rehabilitated drainage infrastructure along the route, adding culverts, concrete side drains and stormwater channels. New road signs and lane markings were installed as well.

Diale-Tlabela said she expects the completed upgrade to tighten links between area producers, nearby markets and the broader regional supply chain. "The R568 connects farmers to markets, businesses to supply chains and communities to opportunities," she said.

She added that the project should make it easier to transport goods through the district and help boost economic activity in and around Bronkhorstspruit.

Officials said the improved road should make travel safer for commuters and other motorists, as well as for freight operators and public transport services.
