Egypt is preparing to commission the first phase of its electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia before the end of the second quarter of 2026, according to the news report.

According to reports, final technical testing for the project has been completed, paving the way for initial operations.

Abdel Fattah El-Sisi ранее emphasised the importance of bringing the first phase online in time to meet peak summer electricity demand.

The project will initially deliver 1,500MW of transmission capacity, with plans to expand to 3,000MW upon full completion.

The interconnection includes three main converter stations located in East Medina and Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, and Badr City in Egypt, linked by approximately 1,350km of overhead transmission lines.

The two countries awarded contracts worth $1.8bn for the project in 2021.

In parallel, Egypt is also progressing with the second phase of its electricity interconnection project with Sudan, which is nearing finalisation.
