US-listed Copper Intelligence has finalized its acquisition of the Sampwe copper project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, expanding its collection of exploration assets across the Central African Copperbelt.

Situated roughly 255 kilometers north of Lubumbashi within the DRC's Haut-Katanga province, the Sampwe project sits on the Kundelungu Mountain Range. Copper Intelligence's planned exploration efforts at the site will focus on the Sonta Sandstone — a sedimentary rock unit in the Kundelungu Formation, well known throughout the Central African Copperbelt for containing copper mineralization.

Executive chairperson Andrew Groves characterized the deal as a boost to the company's presence in the region, noting that the addition of this asset — one he described as globally significant — builds on Copper Intelligence's broader strategy of growing both the value and prominence of high-grade copper deposits it holds in the DRC.

This latest transaction adds to a growing exploration and development portfolio Copper Intelligence has been assembling in the DRC, with a particular emphasis on high-grade copper resources found across the Copperbelt — widely regarded as one of the planet's most productive regions for copper and cobalt mining. This mineral belt extends across the DRC's Haut-Katanga and Lualaba provinces, as well as Zambia's Copperbelt Province, and it continues to attract exploration activity and investment from both junior and mid-tier mining companies, despite persistent regulatory and logistical hurdles within the DRC.

The company's interest in the Sonta Sandstone fits within a broader regional exploration trend, where copper mineralization hosted in sediment layers of the Kundelungu Formation has played a role in several of the Copperbelt's most significant discoveries to date. Copper Intelligence's decision to add Sampwe to its portfolio points to continued interest among US-listed junior mining companies in gaining exposure to DRC copper assets, even as firms operating there continue to work through the permitting, infrastructure, and logistical challenges specific to Haut-Katanga province.

The company has not disclosed the financial details of the acquisition, nor has it provided a timeline for when exploration work at Sampwe is expected to begin.
