The NTCSA is negotiating a new power supply deal for Mozambique's Mozal aluminium smelter ahead of the current contract's expiry in March 2026, aiming to balance industrial support with financial responsibility. The smelter's owner, South32, requires a deeply discounted tariff to remain competitive and has announced plans to mothball the plant, risking 2,500 jobs. A central hurdle is that South Africa's regulated price framework does not apply to cross-border supply, limiting pricing mechanisms. The NTCSA remains committed to a solution that supports regional industry without imposing unintended costs on South African consumers or jeopardizing its own financial sustainability....
