SMA unveils high-power 40ft Medium-Voltage Station as SMA Altenso expands into Africa
SMA Solar Technology has unveiled a new 40-foot Medium Voltage Power Station (MVPS-9200), a compact, turnkey system designed to double the power output for large-scale solar and battery storage projects. Developed in partnership with Italian firm CEP, the integrated “skidtainer” combines two high-performance inverters, transformers, and medium-voltage switchgear to streamline planning, installation, and operations. The solution supports 1500 VDC for both PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS), with options from MVPS-5860 to MVPS-9200 power classes.
Florian Bechtold, Executive Vice President of SMA’s Large-Scale Business Division, highlighted that the system aims to reduce project timelines and costs while enhancing long-term reliability. The new power station is compatible with modern 5+ MWh BESS containers and can be configured for two- or four-hour storage durations.
In a related expansion, SMA Altenso, a subsidiary of SMA, has established Altenso Africa (Pty) Ltd. in South Africa to support utility-scale clean energy projects across Sub-Saharan Africa. Leveraging over 40 years of inverter expertise, Altenso focuses on system integration for battery storage and green hydrogen technologies, with a global portfolio exceeding 1.5 GW in storage and 1 GW in hydrogen-related projects. The new African subsidiary will prioritize BESS deployment and advanced grid-support solutions, including grid-forming and black-start capabilities, to address regional energy instability and growing demand.
