Mozambique, Malawi power interconnector enters final testing

By: Channel Africa

Mozambique and Malawi are one step closer to full regional power integration, with a new 218-kilometre cross-border transmission line expected to enter commercial operation later this month following final system validation.

Joaquim Henriques Ou-Chim, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Electricidade de Moçambique, confirmed that the line linking the two Southern African nations has been fully energised and is undergoing technical testing.

Testing began two weeks ago and is scheduled to run for at least another week. Operational officials noted that the testing window could be extended if any technical anomalies are identified during the stress-testing phase.

Once fully commissioned, the commercial operations phase will allow Malawi to officially join the Southern African Power Pool, enabling the continuous import and export of electricity to boost power reliability for consumers across both borders.
