Egypt is deepening its role in rebuilding Sudan's war-damaged power sector, implementing two solar-energy projects and upgrading a cross-border electricity interconnection from 75 megawatts to 300 megawatts of capacity.

Sudan currently receives approximately 75 megawatts of power through its existing interconnection with Egypt. The upgrade, known as the Toshka 2-Wadi Halfa project, is expected to reach its full 300-megawatt capacity within four to five months, with a longer-term target of raising the link to 1,000 megawatts. Separately, Sudanese authorities are also pursuing roughly 80 megawatts of solar power in the River Nile, Red Sea and Northern states.

According to Sudanese Energy and Oil Minister Moatasem Ibrahim, Egypt has two solar-energy projects underway in Sudan — a sign that the two countries' cooperation now extends past electricity supply and into renewable power generation and grid rehabilitation work. Egypt has additionally rolled out training programs for Sudanese personnel spanning transmission, distribution, substations and interconnection systems.

The cooperation reflects Egypt's evolving role in Sudan's reconstruction, moving from an emergency electricity supplier during the country's conflict, which began in April 2023, toward a longer-term infrastructure partner as Sudan rebuilds its power grid.
