The United National Transport Union (UNTU) has criticized the South African government for failing to shift freight from roads to rail, leading to an overwhelming number of trucks causing severe congestion, road damage, and fatal accidents. The union highlighted that fatal truck crashes occur nearly daily, citing a 2023 report showing 2,237 fatal truck accidents over five years. Despite government promises and a goal to move 250 million tonnes of freight to rail by 2030, insufficient infrastructure protection and rampant vandalism of rail networks have stalled progress. The union argues that the Department of Transport’s new road safety campaign ignores the core issue of excessive road freight, which is largely responsible for road damage and high fatality rates....
