South Africa’s only remaining manganese smelter, Transalloys, has warned it may cut up to 600 jobs due to uncompetitive electricity costs, which are roughly double those faced by international rivals. The company is currently operating just two of its five furnaces. High power prices and Chinese competition have similarly pressured the ferrochrome sector, with several producers announcing closures or job cuts. Although the government has proposed measures such as negotiated electricity tariffs and potential chrome-export levies, reforms have not yet been implemented, leaving energy-intensive smelters at risk....
