Turkish agricultural commodities group Tiryaki Agro has signed a memorandum with the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority to explore the long-term development, modernisation and possible future operation of the Port of Tadjourah.

The proposed cooperation is focused on expanding agricultural trade and logistics capacity serving Djibouti and the wider Horn of Africa.

No concession has been awarded. The parties have not disclosed an investment figure, additional handling capacity, development timetable or the precise operating role being considered for Tiryaki.

The agreement comes despite DPFZA previously signing a framework agreement with Red Sea Gateway Terminal International for a proposed 30-year Tadjourah concession.

That earlier framework envisaged transforming Tadjourah into a multipurpose facility with initial capacity of 5m tonnes annually and an adjacent free zone. The port currently has capacity to handle about 4m tonnes of potash a year.

Neither DPFZA nor Tiryaki explained how the new talks would fit alongside the proposed RSGT concession structure.

Tiryaki already moves agricultural cargo through Djibouti and has previously outlined plans for storage, processing and bulk logistics investments in the country.
