Nineteen African nations are collaborating to establish a regional shipping line to reduce a multi-billion dollar dependency on foreign freight carriers and cushion their economies from global supply chain disruptions. This initiative, which aligns with plans for a continental cabotage law, aims to eliminate numerous destination charges, thereby lowering the cost of goods. The effort faces challenges, as evidenced by Kenya and Tanzania's own nascent shipping lines struggling without vessels. A key requirement for success is a regional cargo protocol to encourage investment in ships and foster collaboration among local operators.
