Ivanhoe Atlantic’s proposed Kon Kweni iron ore project in Guinea's Nimba mountain range threatens critically endangered species, including two rare bat species—the newly described Nimba Mountain bat and Lamotte’s roundleaf bat—as well as western chimpanzees and unique amphibians. The area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site already listed as “in danger,” faces severe biodiversity risks from mining infrastructure and habitat fragmentation. Conservation groups and experts criticize the rushed environmental impact assessment and lack of transparency, urging a moratorium to allow proper evaluation. The Guinean government has not yet granted environmental authorization and says the review process is ongoing with input from international bodies....
