Saudi-backed fuel shipments to ease Yemen power crisis

By: Arab News

Yemen’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy said it had coordinated with Saudi Arabia to secure emergency fuel supplies to sustain power generation amid worsening electricity shortages in Aden and Hadramout.

The ministry said urgent fuel shipments, including diesel and mazut fuel oil, would begin arriving on Tuesday and gradually increase over the next two weeks to help maintain electricity services through the end of the year.

The announcement came after protests in Aden and Hadramout over prolonged power cuts and deteriorating electricity services during the summer season, as high temperatures and increased demand have intensified pressure on the grid.

In a statement, the ministry said it understood the hardships faced by citizens and described electricity as a “life priority” directly linked to the daily stability of citizens.

Officials said authorities were implementing measures on multiple fronts, including securing fuel supplies, improving the technical readiness of power stations and increasing generating capacity.

The ministry added that the crisis was receiving close attention from Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council and government officials, with efforts continuing alongside regional partners to develop more sustainable solutions for the electricity sector.

The ministry said additional emergency projects and new power stations were also being prepared to reduce outage hours and improve the services in the coming period.
