Ghana's NPA Says 93% of Fuel Tankers Now Licensed After Audit Gap
By: OrePulse
Ghana's National Petroleum Authority (NPA) told Parliament's Public Accounts Committee that about 93% of the country's more than 4,000 bulk road vehicles used to transport petroleum products are now licensed, up from the 2,514 vehicles noted as licensed in the 2025 Auditor-General's report.
NPA Chief Executive Godwin Edudzi Tameklo told the committee that licensing allows the authority to monitor which vehicles are on the road, and said enforcement had to be balanced against the risk of worsening fuel shortages. Ghana has nearly 5,000 petroleum retail outlets and just over 4,000 bulk road vehicles supplying them, according to the NPA.
Tameklo said the remaining 7% of vehicles were taken off the road, and their owners were asked to obtain licenses before returning to service.
A representative of the Auditor-General told the committee that auditors had not yet independently verified the 93% figure cited by the NPA.
Committee chair Abena Osei-Asare welcomed the reported progress and said the audit findings "must lead to action."
The exchange came as lawmakers continued to scrutinize compliance gaps identified in the 2025 Auditor-General's report covering the petroleum transport sector, which found that only a fraction of the fleet had been properly licensed at the time of that review.
