Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and its subsidiary GNPC Explorco are preparing ground works ahead of drilling the TUA-1X well near Chegu, in Ghana's Mion District, advancing the corporation's Voltaian Basin exploration campaign toward a first test of the frontier basin's subsurface potential.

The well marks a shift from an extended period of seismic data collection and geological interpretation to direct subsurface testing. Ahead of drilling, crews will build a 13.5-kilometer access road to Chegu, a rig pad at the well site, and other supporting infrastructure needed to safely transport and mobilize drilling equipment once preparation work is complete. The road and pad works mark the first major physical construction tied to the TUA-1X campaign, following completion of earlier subsurface studies.

"The next step for us, after all the subsurface work that we did, is to start the construction of the access road," GNPC Explorco Managing Director Sam Opoku-Arthur said.

The engineering blueprints for the project are finished, and crews have begun construction work on site. GNPC's Deputy Chief Executive, Hamis Ussif, said the well would yield useful information for the company's exploration effort regardless of whether it strikes hydrocarbons.

"You may hit your target, which is to find oil or gas, or you may not find oil or gas, but you still find data," Ussif said.

GNPC said financing is already in place to carry drilling and associated operations beyond the present year.

Spanning about 103,000 square kilometers, the Voltaian Basin ranks as Ghana's largest sedimentary basin. GNPC has said it expects the TUA-1X well and related drilling to progressively reduce exploration risk in the basin and build the technical case needed to attract further investment there. The corporation has framed the move to physical site work as a significant step toward establishing whether the basin holds commercially viable oil or gas resources.

GNPC representatives also met with area traditional authorities, among them the Chegu Naa and the Regent of Dagbon, pledging continued collaboration with local communities as the exploration work moves forward.
