Voltalia and IFC partner on Africa mining renewables

Voltalia has signed a strategic partnership with IFC to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy across mining operations in Africa.
The collaboration aims to identify and develop Power-to-Mine projects that reduce the sector’s dependence on carbon-intensive energy sources by integrating clean power solutions.
Mining is a highly energy-dependent industry, with many sites relying on fossil fuels in regions lacking access to stable grids.
Voltalia and IFC will focus on short- to medium-term delivery of renewable power infrastructure in selected African countries.
The partners plan to provide fully integrated, turnkey energy systems tailored to mining operations, including hybrid solar-wind projects, battery storage, corporate power purchase agreements, and related construction and maintenance services.
Voltalia will contribute its expertise across the full project lifecycle to ensure reliable and high-performance energy systems.
Voltalia chief executive Robert Klein said: “This collaboration with IFC reflects our shared ambition to accelerate the minerals sector’s transition to cleaner energy. By combining Voltalia’s technical expertise with IFC’s development-driven approach, we’re helping to build a more resilient and sustainable energy future for the mining sector.”
IFC global industry director for energy, metals & mining and sustainable infrastructure advisory Valerie Levkov said: “IFC’s partnership with Voltalia will bring renewable energy technologies to Africa’s important minerals sector, which contributes to jobs and economic development across the continent. Working with Voltalia, IFC will support tangible and long-term solutions that bring environmental and economic benefits.”
Voltalia said the initiative aligns with its long-standing commitment to environmental improvement and local development.
The partnership also supports the mineral industry’s broader decarbonisation goals and contributes to Mission 300, an initiative led by the World Bank Group and African Development Bank to connect 300 million people in Africa to sustainable, affordable, and reliable electricity by 2030.
Voltalia operates 3.3GW of renewable capacity in wind, solar, hydro, biomass, and storage, with a development pipeline totalling 17.4GW.
