South Africa’s $163M Springbok Solar Project Begins Commercial Operation

Renewable energy company SOLA Group has begun commercial operation at the Springbok project in South Africa. With a capacity of 195 MW, the project is the largest operational wheeling facility in the country and Africa’s first multi-buyer wheeling solar facility.

Built at a cost of $163 million, the Springbok project is backed by established power purchase agreements, with anchor buys including Amazon Web Services and Sibanye-Stillwater. Other buys include Vodacom, Sasol, Afrimat, Old Mutual South Africa, Redefine Properties, Rio Tinto and BRM Brands. Financial backers include Rand Merchant Bank, Investec, Absa Group, Revego Fund Managers and Ubuzwe.

The start of operation at the Springbok project brings SOLA Group’s portfolio to 464 MWp of private wheeling projects.
