Sonangol, Gemcorp Team Up for KUMA Project

Angola’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas Diamantino Azevedo launched the KUMA Project in Cabinda this week. Set to provide specialized training for 5,000 people, the project will support operations at the Cabinda Refinery.
Spearheaded by Angola’s national oil company Sonangol and investment company Gemcorp – the developers of the Cabinda Refinery – the project will utilize both fixed and mobile training centers to provide certified training courses across a variety of disciplines. These include courses in mechanics, electrical engineering, welding, plumbing and IT. Geared towards youth, women and people with disabilities, the project will also provide trainees with a monthly allowance of Kz 100,000 and preference for jobs associated with the Cabinda Refinery.
The Cabinda Refinery –Angola’s second refining facility – is expected to come online in September 2025. The first phase will feature a capacity of 30,000 barrels per day (bpd), while the second will double output to 60,000 bpd. With the launch of the KUMA Project, the country strives to ensure local Angolans are not only participating but leading operations at the facility.
