Nairobi, Kenya, has been chosen to host the 2029 World Geothermal Congress (WGC), marking the first time the global geothermal industry's premier event will be held in Africa. The International Geothermal Association (IGA) selected Kenya in recognition of its leadership in large-scale geothermal power generation and the continent's growing role in the sector.

Kenya, a global geothermal pioneer, will provide a platform to showcase regional innovation and ambition in geothermal development. The official handover from Calgary, host of the 2026 Congress, will take place during that event, after which the IGA and the Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK) will finalize hosting arrangements.

IGA CEO Dr. Marit Brommer emphasized the significance of bringing the Congress to Africa, while Kenyan Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi affirmed the government's commitment to supporting a successful event. The selection highlights Africa's rising influence in the global energy transition and Kenya's established geothermal expertise.
