The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is far more than a transport provider; it is a historic cornerstone of technical skill development and a vital institution for the country’s economic future. For decades, the NRZ served as a de facto "university of trades," operating robust apprenticeship programs that produced highly skilled artisans and engineers in fields from electrical and mechanical engineering to signals and civil works. Its disciplined, hands-on training on real locomotives and infrastructure created a globally respected talent pool.

Today, this legacy is reflected in the international demand for NRZ-trained professionals. Thousands of former employees now work on rail networks worldwide, from the United Kingdom and Australia to Southern Africa and the Middle East, valued for their technical competence and problem-solving skills. However, the decline of the NRZ in recent years has weakened Zimbabwe’s domestic skills pipeline, threatening a shortage of artisans and technicians essential for mining, manufacturing, and construction.

Revitalizing the NRZ is therefore not merely a transport initiative but a strategic investment in national industrial capacity. A modernized railway would restore its role as a major employer and trainer, lower logistics costs for key industries, reduce road damage, and rebuild Zimbabwe’s technical workforce—securing both economic growth and the country’s position as an exporter of skilled talent.
