International Alliances Propel Africa’s Natural Gas Industry Forward

As the world shifts towards cleaner energy sources, Africa’s natural gas is emerging as a key component of the energy transition, thanks in part to international partnerships.
The continent, holding around 6% of the world’s natural gas reserves, is poised to become a significant contributor to the global LNG supply by 2030, with projects in Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, and Mauritania leading the way. With LNG demand expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.5% through 2030, Africa is well-positioned to meet this demand, particularly from European and Asian markets.
Renewed investor confidence is evident as Austrian energy company OMV resumes exploration in Libya’s Sirte Basin. Partnering with Libya’s National Oil Corporation, OMV is advancing an infrastructure-led campaign to unlock reserves near existing facilities. OMV’s participation in the upcoming African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies 2025 conference in Cape Town highlights the importance of cross-border collaboration and investment strategies.
North Africa is rapidly becoming a natural gas hub, with major developments in Libya, Algeria, Egypt, and Morocco. Libya is increasing gas production through projects like Structures A&E, while Algeria aims for a production rate of 200 billion cubic meters annually by 2027. Egypt continues to develop the Zohr field, and Morocco is progressing with the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline to enhance regional supply.
Saudi Arabia’s engagement with Africa’s gas sector is a key component of its energy diplomacy, as the country builds partnerships to unlock the continent’s gas potential. Saudi Aramco is expanding its collaboration with African national oil companies to support gas monetisation and production, backed by a $41 billion funding package for sub-Saharan Africa to promote gas-related projects.
NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, notes that international engagement is transforming Africa’s natural gas sector, strengthening its position in the global energy market. Strategic partnerships are essential for fully monetising Africa’s natural gas potential.
