High speed rail to reshape Morocco’s transport network

By: Logistics middle east

Morocco’s National Railway Office (ONCF) has confirmed that its new Kenitra–Marrakech high-speed rail line will be completed on schedule in 2029. The project is the centerpiece of a $10 billion national rail investment strategy aimed at expanding capacity, modernizing rolling stock, and enhancing connectivity through 2030.

The 430-kilometer electrified extension will connect to the existing Tangier–Kenitra high-speed line, forming a continuous corridor from Tangier to Marrakech. Upon completion, travel time between these two cities is expected to be reduced to approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes. The investment package also includes the acquisition of 168 new trainsets, 18 of which will be high-speed units capable of 320 km/h, along with intercity and suburban trains to improve service frequency across the network.

Officials describe the initiative as the largest infrastructure program in ONCF’s history, designed to strengthen domestic mobility, stimulate job creation, and solidify Morocco’s position as a regional leader in rail modernization and sustainable transport.
