From Gorée to Energy Sovereignty: Africa’s Path to Energy Independence

  • By: Africa 24
  • The MSGBC Oil, Gas & Power 2025 conference in Dakar, Senegal, highlighted a pivotal moment for West Africa, showcasing the region's growing energy sovereignty and economic optimism. The event gathered governments, investors, and energy companies as countries like Senegal and Mauritania have begun oil and gas production, with significant projects such as the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG venture and the Sangomar oil field now operational. These developments signal a regional drive to leverage hydrocarbon resources for development, even amid external pressures to transition more rapidly away from fossil fuels.
  • The narrative of self-determination was powerfully underscored by a post-conference visit to Gorée Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizing Africa's historical loss of agency. The African Energy Chamber (AEC) framed the current energy debate as a parallel struggle, arguing that Africa has the right to use its oil and gas resources to lift millions out of energy poverty and fund critical infrastructure, industrialization, and social services. AEC Executive Chairman NJ Ayuk stated that for Africa, energy sovereignty represents a pathway to a self-determined and thriving future.
  • Key international organizations, including the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), played a prominent role at the conference, offering support and data-driven insights to emerging African producers. The MSGBC region itself is experiencing rapid activity, with new exploration bid rounds in Guinea-Conakry and The Gambia, alongside Mauritania's positioning as a future green hydrogen hub. The overarching message from the conference and the AEC is that Africa views its natural resources as a vital engine for job creation, energy access, and asserting control over its economic destiny.
