Egypt Launches Large-Scale Oil Exploration Program

By: TrendsN Africa

The General Petroleum Company (GPC), a subsidiary of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), has launched a large-scale drilling campaign in the Ras Gharib fields of Egypt’s Eastern Desert. The year-long initiative aims to drill 75 new wells, to add around 7,500 barrels of crude oil per day and raise total production to 9,000 barrels per day.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, the project is part of Egypt’s strategic plan to enhance domestic oil production and reduce dependence on imported crude.

As part of the effort, the first of three newly supplied advanced drilling rigs—each with 1,000 horsepower—has already been deployed. This initiative supports the ministry’s broader production-focused strategy, which prioritizes increasing output as a key pillar for energy security and economic growth.
