Botswana, Namibia Eye Joint Oil Refinery

Botswana and Namibia are exploring the possibility of jointly developing an oil refinery. The project would enable both countries to add value to local crude, reduce fuel imports, and bolster industrial development and regional cooperation.
The proposal was discussed during a working visit by Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to Gaborone, Botswanan this month. President Nandi Ndaitwah and her counterpart, Botswana’s President Duma Boko, agreed that addressing poverty and inequality requires concrete joint projects.
The discussions covered the diamond sector, with both countries agreeing to explore avenues for collaboration. President Nandi-Ndaitwah and President Boko directed their respective mining ministers to coordinate closely to ensure the sector generates more revenue and value for both nations.
The two heads of state also discussed the completion of the Trans-Kalahari railway line, which is intended to facilitate trade and transport between the two countries. They also emphasized the need to increase the volume of goods imported through Namibia’s Port of Walvis Bay.
