Addis Ababa Set to Host Africa’s First Energy Efficiency Summit

The African Union announced that Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will host the inaugural African Energy Efficiency Summit on December 10-11, convening high-level leaders and experts to advance the continent's energy transition. African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, Lerato Mataboge, stated the summit aims to consolidate Africa's energy efficiency agenda by reinforcing strategic partnerships and accelerating the implementation of the African Energy Strategy. Mataboge added that the event will feature the official launch of the African Energy Efficiency Alliance, which targets a 50 per cent boost in the continent's energy productivity by 2050, rising to 70 per cent by 2063.

Meanwhile, Bahru Olgira, Deputy Director General of Ethiopia’s Petroleum and Energy Authority, noted that the country is formulating a national program to enhance electricity efficiency, acknowledging the significant investment required in energy infrastructure. He emphasized Ethiopia's expansion of electricity supply through diverse sources to ensure sustainable access. Olgira also highlighted Ethiopia's vast renewable energy potential, underscoring efforts to establish the nation as a clean energy hub in East Africa and to improve regional power interconnections with neighboring countries.
