French-Omani group secures funding for $130m wind farm

By: AGBI

A French-Omani consortium has secured funding for a 120 megawatt (MW) wind power project in northeastern Oman as the sultanate focuses on reducing its dependence on natural gas.

The group comprises France’s EDF Power Solutions, Al Khadra Partners and OQ Alternative Energy, a unit of the state-backed energy group OQ.

Located 440km from the Port of Duqm, the OMR50 million ($130 million) Jaalan Bani Bu Ali project is expected to commence commercial operation in the third quarter of 2027, the companies said in a joint statement.

Once operational, the wind farm is forecast to power more than 13,500 households annually and avoid more than 270,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.

The consortium signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with the government-owned Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) in December 2025.

Oman is targeting net-zero gas emissions by 2050. It aims to produce 30 percent of its electricity using renewable sources by 2030 and reach 100 percent clean energy capacity by 2050.

The Gulf state is aiming to have six solar power plants with a combined capacity of 6 gigawatts online in 2030 and 2031.

Nama PWP’s project pipeline through to 2030-31 includes 24 solar and wind projects and a waste-to-energy scheme.

In November, a consortium comprising OQAE, the UAE’s Masdar and South Korea’s Midland Power appointed Chinese state-owned CPECC as the EPC contractor for the 500MW Ibri III independent solar power project in northwest Oman.
