Japan Considering Helping South Africa Finance Energy Reform
Japan is considering providing financial assistance to South Africa to support the reorganization of its energy sector. The potential funding was reported to be under discussion between the two countries.
This initiative would build upon existing Japanese support. Late last year, Japanese institutions lent up to $150 million to the state-owned Development Bank of Southern Africa specifically for financing renewable energy projects.
The discussions highlight international involvement in addressing South Africa's ongoing energy challenges, which have been characterized by frequent power outages from the national utility, Eskom.
