UAE’s GSU launches phase two of Green Berbera renewable energy project

By: Utilities Middle East

Abu Dhabi-based Global South Utilities (GSU) has announced the start of phase two of its Green Berbera Initiative, a major renewable energy programme aimed at transforming power generation in Somaliland’s strategic port city of Berbera.

The new phase includes the development of a 12MWp solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 70MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), building on the 5MWp solar facility commissioned by the company earlier this year.

GSU said the project will significantly expand Berbera’s renewable energy capacity while improving grid reliability through utility-scale battery storage capable of supporting electricity supply during peak demand periods and lower solar generation hours.

Once operational, the project is expected to generate around 24,000MWh of clean electricity annually, enough to supply the equivalent of nearly 67,000 households each year.

The company estimates the development will reduce carbon emissions by approximately 16,500 tonnes annually by displacing diesel-based power generation across the city’s electricity network.

Combined generation capacity under phases one and two is expected to provide electricity equivalent to nearly 95,000 households annually, expanding access to renewable power and supporting long-term energy security.

GSU said the project forms part of its broader Green Berbera Vision, announced in February 2026, which aims to transition the city’s electricity system from diesel dependence to a renewable-powered utility supported by solar energy and battery storage.

The initiative also supports the Berbera Economic Zone, where access to reliable renewable power is expected to enhance the area’s attractiveness to industrial operators, logistics businesses and international investors seeking lower-carbon operations.

GSU currently holds a 45% stake in Berbera Electricity Company (BEC), the city’s sole utility provider.
