Pretorius, Boardman join Harmony Gold board as independent directors
By: OrePulse
Independent nonexecutive directors Alwyn Pretorius and James Boardman have joined the board of Harmony Gold Mining Company, the South African gold producer, with the appointments taking effect on October 15, 2026, the company said.
In announcing the appointments, Harmony said its board had assessed and confirmed that both new directors satisfy the independence standards required of nonexecutive board members. The company added that it had completed fit-and-proper assessments for both men under the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Listings Requirements before finalizing their appointments. Those assessments returned satisfactory outcomes, and Harmony said neither director's declaration disclosed any adverse integrity information that would have affected the board's decision. The company did not disclose further detail on how the assessments were conducted.
Pretorius, a qualified engineer, brings mining-operations experience to his new board seat. He previously held senior roles at Newmont, serving as regional senior vice-president covering Africa and South America, and separately as managing director of the company's Papua New Guinea operations. Before joining Newmont, Pretorius spent nearly a decade at Harmony itself, holding a series of executive roles between 2006 and 2015 that culminated in his appointment as chief operating officer. He left that role in 2015, more than a decade before his return to the company in this new nonexecutive capacity.
Boardman joins the board with a different set of credentials, rooted in capital markets, private equity and corporate advisory work rather than mine operations. A chartered financial analyst, he has held positions at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and at global consultancy Bain & Company, as well as at private capital firms, over the course of a career spanning finance and advisory roles.
Harmony chairperson Patrice Motsepe welcomed the appointments in a statement accompanying the announcement. "We are pleased to welcome Pretorius and Boardman to the Harmony board," he said.
The two appointments follow completion of Harmony's internal vetting process for incoming nonexecutive directors, a process that includes the independence screening and the fit-and-proper checks required under JSE listing rules. Pretorius and Boardman add mining-operations and capital-markets backgrounds, respectively, to the board, with Harmony presenting the appointments as part of its ongoing board composition and governance arrangements. No further changes to the board's composition were announced alongside the two appointments.
