Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone draws $7bn from investors

Egypt’s Suez Canal Economic Zone attracted $7 billion of investment in a year as the government stepped up efforts to turn the area into a regional centre for manufacturing and logistics.

The funding allowed the zone to make record earnings during the 2025/26 fiscal year, which ended on June 30. Its revenues rose 37 percent year on year to nearly EGP15.9 billion ($310 million).

The $7 billion investment covers 117 projects and will provide more than 73,000 jobs when they are completed, the zone’s chairman Mostafa Sheikhoun said at a seminar in Cairo on Monday.

Sheikhoun said the additional funding was a result of promotional campaigns, economic pacts signed by Egypt with other governments and the zone’s access to 3.5 billion consumers across more than 100 countries.

He said the zone was targeting 21 sectors covering industries, logistics and services with a focus on investors from China and other Asian countries.

Investments in the Suez Canal Economic Zone are expected to jump following plans announced by a group of Chinese companies to invest $2 billion in the construction of an industrial complex.

Hussein Eissa, Egypt’s deputy prime minister for economic affairs, discussed the project during a meeting with a delegation from China in Cairo last week.

The complex is expected to create more than 3,000 jobs. The investment would also help to meet domestic demand and increase exports to international markets, according to a statement published on Egypt’s cabinet website.
