De Beers Delivers First P1bn Tranche to Botswana's Diamond Fund

De Beers Delivers First P1bn Tranche to Botswana's Diamond Fund

De Beers has made its first payment into Botswana's Diamonds for Development Fund, transferring an initial P1 billion into the vehicle set up by the diamond miner and the Botswana government to channel diamond revenue into broader economic diversification.

The payment is the first concrete capital flow into the fund since its formal establishment earlier this year. The fund was created as part of the partnership between De Beers and the government of Botswana, with the stated aim of using proceeds from the country's diamond industry to support growth in sectors beyond mining.

The fund's governance structure has also been put in place. Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has been appointed chairperson, and a ten-member independent board has been named to oversee its operations. The board held its first in-country meetings in Gaborone in September, where members met with stakeholders including Botswana President Duma Boko.

The board is described as independent of both De Beers and the Botswana government in its day-to-day decision-making.

De Beers CEO Al Cook said the fund represented a new approach to deploying diamond revenue in Botswana. The fund, he said, would "introduce a new vehicle through which diamond revenues can generate sustainable economic opportunities beyond diamonds."

The P1 billion installment marks the transition from the fund's governance setup, including the board's first in-country engagements in Gaborone, to active disbursement of capital. De Beers and the Botswana government have positioned the fund as a mechanism intended to direct diamond-sector revenue toward investment in other areas of the economy over time.

The September meetings in Gaborone brought the newly named board together with government stakeholders for the first time since its members were appointed, as the fund moved from being a governance structure on paper to an operating body engaging with officials on the ground.

De Beers and the Botswana government have described the Diamonds for Development Fund as central to efforts to diversify the country's economy beyond its diamond sector. The arrival of the first P1 billion installment gives that stated goal its first concrete financial backing, following months in which the fund's leadership and board were put in place.

Cook's comments tied the payment to that broader diversification aim, framing the fund as a new channel for directing diamond-sector proceeds into growth outside mining.
