UAE–South Africa Boost $8.5bn Trade Ties with Focus on Renewable Energy Growth

The UAE’s non-oil foreign trade with South Africa soared to US$8.5 billion in 2024, marking a 14% rise compared to 2023 and a significant 120% growth since 2019.
This growth emphasises the UAE’s focus on enhancing economic partnerships with South Africa, as highlighted by HE Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade.
In a recent meeting with the South African Business Council in the UAE, Dr. Al Zeyoudi discussed strategies for boosting trade, investment, and private sector collaboration. He noted that South Africa is the UAE’s second-largest non-oil trade partner in Africa, showing great potential for expanding private sector relations. In the first half of 2025 alone, non-oil trade reached US$3.93 billion.
The discussions emphasised areas such as food security, logistics, infrastructure, tourism, and renewable energy. By collaborating on these sectors, both nations aim to drive economic growth and sustainable development.
Over 3,690 South African businesses operate in the UAE, while UAE companies are increasingly active in South Africa, with major players like DP World and AMEA Power leading projects. South Africa’s position as Africa’s largest exporter and highest nominal GDP holder makes it a key market for future collaboration.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to explore projects that will further enhance trade relations, aiming for a prosperous future for both countries.
