Turkey to drill for oil off Somalia coast by 2026

By: Middle east eye

Turkey hopes to begin drilling for hydrocarbon resources off the coast of Somalia in 2026, according to Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar. The announcement follows the completion of a 3D seismic survey across three offshore zones last year by the research vessel Oruc Reis. Bayraktar stated that 2026 would likely be a drilling year, with a formal announcement possible in January once the seismic results are fully analyzed.

The minister noted that operations would be complex, conducted in deep waters of around 3,000 meters, and would involve both offshore and onshore blocks. He acknowledged significant challenges, including a lack of infrastructure and security concerns, which previously required Turkish frigates to escort the research vessel. A Somali source indicated that a tender to build necessary road access would be launched soon. The development follows years of substantial Turkish investment in Somalia, including humanitarian aid, a large military base, and management of key infrastructure.
