Tanzania’s Amsons Group, Zambian firm partner for $900m power projects
Tanzanian conglomerate Amsons Group has entered a strategic partnership with Zambia's Exergy Africa Limited to develop 1,300 megawatts of new power generation projects with a combined investment of $900 million. The joint venture, signed in Lusaka, aims to develop 1,000 MW of solar power and 300 MW of coal-fired generation to bolster Zambia's energy security and support regional industrial growth.
The collaboration leverages Amsons Group's extensive regional infrastructure—including fuel storage, logistics, and cross-border operations—with Exergy Africa's local expertise. Zambia's Energy Minister stated that the partnership aligns with the government's multi-source energy strategy and is expected to deliver 500 MW of solar capacity within 18 months, with the full 1,300 MW operational within 24 months, moving Zambia into a power surplus.
Executives from both companies framed the agreement as a major step toward regional energy integration and economic resilience, highlighting its potential to unlock industrial and mining opportunities while creating jobs and improving grid stability.
