Sudans PM to visit Saudi Arabia for energy talks
September 11, 2025 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudanese Prime Minister Kamel Idris will visit Saudi Arabia next week for talks on energy cooperation with Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman, Sudan’s energy minister said on Thursday.
Energy Minister Al-Mutasim Ibrahim stated that the visit would focus on cooperation in the electricity and petroleum sectors, following a meeting with Saudi Ambassador Ali bin Hassan to discuss arrangements for the visit.
Ibrahim said his ministry presented partnership proposals to its Saudi counterpart, including projects with oil giant Aramco and with manufacturers of electrical transformers.
Sudan’s electricity sector has suffered widespread destruction during the country’s conflict, with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) blamed for looting and destroying transformers and launching drone attacks on power stations.
A government committee working to restore services in the capital estimates that Khartoum state needs 14,000 transformers and that damage to the electricity sector there totals $468 million.
Ibrahim noted that Saudi Arabia has sought to mediate an end to the war through talks held in Jeddah.
The Saudi ambassador said his country supports Sudan’s unity and expressed hope that the prime minister’s visit would result in joint economic and service projects, a Sudanese government statement said.
