By: Africa oil & gas report

British energy firm Octopus Energy Generation has joined the "Scaling Up Renewables in Africa" (SURA) campaign as its sole private-sector partner from the United Kingdom. The global campaign, which involves the European Commission, the Republic of South Africa, and the Global Citizen initiative, recently announced it had raised $17.8 billion in public and private contributions at the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg.

Octopus is leveraging its "Power Africa" initiative to catalyze $450 million in funding. This capital will focus on a range of clean-energy investments, including grid infrastructure, distributed energy assets, and new solar and wind generation projects to connect power with people and businesses.

The company's commitment builds on its existing investments in the continent, including a recent stake in the off-grid solar battery pioneer MOPO. Additionally, in partnership with the Akuna Group, Octopus is developing Sierra Leone's first-ever wind farm on Sherbro Island, a project promoted by actor Idris Elba. The SURA campaign targets generating 27,000 MW of renewable energy and reaching 17.5 million households across Africa by 2030.
