Saudi Arabia seeks developers for seven renewable projects

By: AGBI

Saudi Arabia is seeking developers for seven new renewable projects with a total capacity of 5,300 megawatts (MW).

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC), the principal energy off-taker, has issued a request for qualification for new projects under the seventh phase of the national renewable energy programme.

The kingdom has set a goal of generating half of its power needs from renewable energy sources by 2030.

The proposed solar energy projects include 1,400MW Tabarjal (2) in Al Jouf, 600MW Mawqaq in Hail, 600MW Tathleeth in Aseer and 500MW South AlUla in Medina.

The two wind power projects include 1,300MW Balghat and 900MW Shaqran in Medina.

SPCC will oversee the preliminary assessment, propose electricity generation projects, and sign power purchase agreements with developing consortiums.

To date, the state entity has launched renewable energy projects with a capacity exceeding 43GW and signed power purchase agreements with a capacity of more than 38GW.

In July, SPCC signed power purchase agreements for seven solar and wind power projects, with a total capacity of 15,000MW and investments of SAR 31 billion ($8.3 billion).
