Oman's Asyad gears up for hydrogen logistics, green bunkering, tighter climate rules

Strategic Alignment with Global Regulations

Oman's Asyad Group is proactively preparing for new International Maritime Organization (IMO) and European Union climate regulations that will reshape global shipping standards. Despite the IMO's postponement of carbon pricing proposals, the company is strengthening operational efficiency and aligning with specific EU regulations including FuelEU Maritime, the EU Emissions Trading System, and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) to ensure compliance and maintain competitiveness.

Positioning Oman as a Hydrogen Export Hub

Asyad is playing a central role in Oman's Vision 2040 ambition to become a leading global producer and exporter of green hydrogen. The Group has been selected by Hydrom as the national logistics champion for hydrogen projects and is advancing infrastructure at Port of Duqm and Salalah Port to handle hydrogen exports. These ports are being prepared with storage, bunkering, and intermodal systems, leveraging their strategic locations near awarded hydrogen blocks and special economic zones.

Developing Low-Carbon Bunkering Infrastructure

The company has completed a comprehensive Low-Carbon Molecule Bunkering study identifying viable fuels including green ammonia, e-methanol, advanced biofuels, and LNG. Duqm and Salalah have been designated as priority locations, with Asyad developing baseline designs and governance frameworks. In 2024, the Group initiated development of a green hydrogen bunkering station and achieved a 6% emissions reduction across its operations, positioning Oman to lead regional low-carbon bunkering.

Pioneering Green Shipping Corridors

Asyad is developing the framework for what could become the world's first liquid hydrogen corridor between Duqm and Europe. Feasibility work covers port-ship interfaces, logistics flow, and safety systems, with close coordination between Omani authorities and European partners. This groundwork builds on major 2024 upgrades at Duqm, including the launch of a new container terminal that reinforces port readiness for advanced energy logistics.

Diversified Decarbonization Approach

Beyond hydrogen, Asyad is exploring multiple clean energy pathways including wave energy studies in Sohar and Duqm to assess integration potential, and early-stage Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) assessments. The Group has already achieved significant emissions reductions through LNG and biofuel adoption across its fleet, while its drydock has expanded retrofit capacity for cleaner vessels. All business units now maintain ISO 22301 certification for business continuity, ensuring operational readiness for future clean energy technologies.
