NEDC Backs Solar Mini-Grid Rollout in Niger State
The Niger Electricity Distribution Company (NEDC), a subsidiary of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC), has welcomed the Niger State Government’s deployment of solar mini-grids and renewable energy systems across underserved communities. The initiative, led by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, targets long-standing gaps in electricity access.
The programme has delivered 24-hour solar power to more than 180 communities that lacked reliable electricity for over a decade. In addition, the state has transitioned critical public facilities to independent solar systems, including Government House, the General Hospital, the IBB Specialist Hospital and the Niger State Water Board. Consequently, these institutions now operate with improved energy reliability.
Chijioke Okwuokenye, Managing Director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, expressed support for the initiative. He stated that the programme complements Nigeria’s decentralised power reforms under the Electricity Act 2023. In addition, he said it demonstrates how cooperation among governments, regulators and licensed operators can accelerate electrification.
Meanwhile, Sam Odekina, Chief Business Officer and Acting Managing Director of NEDC, noted that the mini-grid rollout aligns with the company’s inclusive electrification strategy. He emphasised that NEDC, as the licensed intrastate distributor under the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC), remains ready to collaborate on hybrid and grid-integrated solutions.
The company highlighted that the projects align with the decentralised, multi-source framework introduced by the Electricity Act 2023. Moreover, the establishment of NSERC and the domestication of electricity regulations within the state strengthen the regulatory environment.
Solar mini-grids in locations such as Lambata in Gurara Local Government Area have benefited from partnerships involving the Rural Electrification Agency and international donors. These efforts reduce reliance on expensive grid extensions in remote areas where conventional infrastructure remains unviable.
NEDC reaffirmed its commitment to work closely with the Niger State Government and NSERC. The company plans to explore hybrid grid-renewable systems, commercially viable grid expansions and public-private partnerships.
Through these coordinated efforts, NEDC and the state government aim to enhance livelihoods, strengthen energy security and stimulate industrial growth. They seek to build a more resilient and inclusive energy future for Niger State.
