Libya's Waha oil adds two gas wells at Faregh field to boost energy supply

By: Business insider Africa

Libya has boosted its domestic gas supply with the commissioning of two new wells at the Faregh field. The wells, designated BB-19 and BB-20, are expected to produce a combined 26 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, helping to meet rising electricity demand and improve the reliability of gas supply to power facilities.

State-owned Waha Oil Company, a subsidiary of the National Oil Corporation (NOC), announced the successful drilling, testing, and production startup of the wells, emphasizing adherence to high technical standards and the use of modern drilling technologies.

The Faregh field, located in the Sirte Basin, currently produces approximately 150 million cubic feet of gas per day, with a potential capacity of up to 250 million cubic feet per day. Libya, Africa's fourth-largest natural gas producer after Algeria, Egypt, and Nigeria, primarily directs its gas output toward domestic consumption, including powering the Sarir plant and coastal gas network.

Waha Oil is a joint venture between Libya's NOC, France's TotalEnergies, and U.S.-based ConocoPhillips. The new wells mark a step in Libya's broader strategy to increase hydrocarbon production, stabilize its energy sector, and support economic recovery after years of disruption.
