Iran, Russia deepen nuclear energy ties with deal on small-scale nuclear power plants
Iran and Russia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate on the joint development of small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs).
The agreement was signed in Moscow by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI). The MoU is intended to lead to contracts for the design and construction of SMRs, with the goal of strengthening Iran’s energy security and supporting its industrial sector.
Mohammad Eslami stated that the two nations have agreed to build eight new nuclear power plants in Iran under an existing intergovernmental contract. Iran's goal is to reach 20 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2040. He confirmed that construction of the second and third units at the Bushehr nuclear power plant is already underway with Russian involvement. Four of the planned new units will be located at the Bushehr site, with sites for the remaining reactors already prepared.
The first unit of the Bushehr plant was connected to Iran's national grid in 2011 and was officially handed over to Iran in 2013.
