Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s forthcoming state visit to Ethiopia will concentrate on reinforcing collaboration in solar energy, agriculture, and mining, as India aims to intensify its strategic partnership with African nations. Renewable energy—specifically solar power—is anticipated to be a central theme, with both countries examining avenues to enhance energy access through grid-connected and off-grid solar solutions. Cooperation may extend to rooftop solar projects, regional solar connectivity, solar-powered agricultural pumps, and decentralised energy systems, in line with India’s International Solar Alliance framework.

Beyond renewables, the visit is poised to advance bilateral ties in agriculture and mining—sectors vital to Ethiopia’s economic growth and to expanding trade and investment links. India already holds significant investments in Ethiopia across agriculture, manufacturing, and engineering. Discussions will also encompass a broad spectrum of cooperation areas, including digital public infrastructure, cybersecurity, education, health, and defence, reflecting India’s focus on long-term development partnerships and South–South cooperation.

The visit is viewed as a component of India’s wider outreach to the Global South, positioning Ethiopia as a key partner in sustainable development and economic collaboration within Africa. Indian officials have noted that New Delhi intends to apply its expertise in renewable energy, digital systems, and capacity building to support Ethiopia’s developmental goals. Modi’s schedule will also include engagements with the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia, underscoring the people-to-people dimension of bilateral relations. This visit aligns with India’s ongoing diplomatic and economic engagement with Africa, emphasizing partnerships in clean energy, critical minerals, and inclusive growth.
