A New Maritime Link for East Africa

Global logistics leader DP World has inaugurated a new shipping service that directly connects Jebel Ali Port in the UAE with Berbera Port in Somalia. Operating on a regular nine-day schedule, this route is designed to strengthen trade links between the Gulf and East Africa, actively positioning Berbera as a central logistics hub for the entire region. By including scheduled stops at Aden and Djibouti, the service offers a faster and more reliable alternative for shippers, reducing dependence on traditional routes and mitigating regional bottlenecks.

Infrastructure as a Catalyst for Growth

This new service is underpinned by significant infrastructure investments at Berbera Port. The facility now boasts a 1,050-meter quay, including a 400-meter berth capable of handling the world's largest Triple E-class vessels, alongside expanded capabilities for bulk and breakbulk cargo. The modern container terminal is synergistically linked to the nearby Berbera Special Economic Zone (BSEZ), creating a comprehensive ecosystem designed to attract foreign investment and drive industrial growth across the Horn of Africa.

Strategic Impact and Regional Integration

DP World's strategy extends far beyond the port itself, aiming to reshape regional trade dynamics. The new corridor is part of a broader vision to offer viable alternatives to traditional logistics routes. This is supported by critical landside infrastructure, including a new 250 km road and the Hargeisa Bypass, which enhance connectivity to key landlocked markets like Ethiopia. By providing a seamless link from sea to inland destinations, Berbera is solidifying its role as a strategic gateway for East Africa's economic expansion.

Proven Results and Long-Term Commitment

The transformation of Berbera Port since DP World assumed management in 2017 has been dramatic, with a 450% increase in vessel productivity and significant growth in container and general cargo volumes. This new shipping service is a direct extension of DP World's nearly $3 billion investment in African ports and logistics, with an additional $3 billion planned over the next five years. It exemplifies the company's mission to build resilient, sustainable trade corridors that unlock long-term prosperity for its partners and local communities.
