Ghana launches solar powered Water-Energy-Nexus Project
The government of Ghana has turned the sod on the country’s first solar irrigation project under the Water-Energy-Nexus Project which it hopes to replicate across the country to expand renewable energy use and strengthen national food security.
The Water-Energy-Nexus Project will deploy large-scale solar photovoltaic systems, wind power, and other renewable technologies to deliver potable water, run irrigation infrastructure, boost farm productivity, and improve crop yields.
“In the coming weeks, we will begin pilot projects in three regions. These projects will involve installing solar-powered pumps to enable all-year farming, boost food security, cut down the import bill, and stabilise the currency,” said Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Mr John Abdulai Jinapor.
