Ghana, Switzerland launch $200m rooftop solar energy drive

By: ESI Africa

Spearheaded by Switzerland’s KliK Foundation in partnership with Ghana’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition (MoEnGT), the programme aims to expand affordable renewable energy access for households, small businesses, and industries.

Solar project help drive renewable energy objectives

Speaking at the launch event in Accra last week, Felix Addo-Okyeireh, Deputy Executive Director of the EPA, hailed the initiative as “a significant step forward in Ghana’s climate action and clean energy transition.”

“This programme is a tangible example of how Ghana is leveraging the international carbon market under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Through rigorous monitoring and reporting, we will ensure that all emission reductions are real, measurable, and credible,” he was quoted by local media as saying.

Under the NCEP, Ghana plans to develop 137MW of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity across approximately 4,000 installations.

The project is expected to cut greenhouse gas emissions, strengthen energy security, and catalyse private sector innovation in clean energy technologies.

Clean energy programme’s wider intention

Addo-Okyeireh noted that Ghana’s cooperation with Switzerland on carbon markets dates back to 2020, following a bilateral climate agreement ratified by parliament.

This collaboration, he said, has now paved the way for large-scale mitigation projects such as the rooftop solar programme.

The Ministry for Energy and Green Transition said the NCEP aligns with Ghana’s broader climate and development goals.

“The global energy transition is accelerating, and Ghana is positioning itself to benefit. The National Clean Energy Programme supports our Energy Transition Framework and our NDC goals, while promoting innovation, job creation and sustainable development.

“The government cannot do this alone. We invite private investors, development partners and innovators to join hands in building a cleaner, safer and more prosperous Ghana.”

Ghana energy ambition lauded

Switzerland’s Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, commended Ghana’s leadership in advancing climate cooperation and clean energy access.

She noted that while Ghana has achieved nearly 90% electricity access, around 64% of its power generation still comes from fossil fuels, underscoring the need for diversification.

With the new programme, Ghana aims to strengthen its path toward net-zero emissions by 2070, guided by the National Energy Transition Framework and the forthcoming Renewable Energy Master Plan (2026–2030).
