Ghana Starts Construction at Kumasi Transmission Project

Ghana has officially started construction at the Anwomaso-Ahodwo GRIDCo Transmission Line Project, situated in Kumasi. The project aims to upgrade an 18-kilometer 161kV transmission line from a single to a double circuit, increasing power capacity from 330 MVA to over 1,000 MVA.
Funded through a €9.7 million grant from the European Union in partnership with the French Development Agency, the project is part of Ghana’s efforts to modernize its national grid and improve power supply reliability in Kumasi and surrounding areas. The government seeks to establish Kumasi as major power generation enclave, aiming to exceed 1,000 MW of capacity, primarily using natural gas.
“This project is not merely about connecting substations. It is a strategic shift toward self-reliance, regional competitiveness, and inclusive prosperity,” stated John Abdulai Jinapor, Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition.
